In a recent development at the Bolgatanga District Court, six students find themselves in police custody, facing charges of assaulting one of their peers.

The accused individuals, whose identities remain undisclosed, are aged between 17 and 20. They stand accused of two counts: conspiracy to commit assault and actual assault, as per section 84 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) of Ghana.

According to Chief Inspector Francis Tamanja, the prosecutor in the case, the incident unfolded when the complainant, also a student residing in Sawaba, a suburb of Bolgatanga, received a troubling phone call on September 30. The call alleged that she was involved in an amorous relationship with one of the accused persons’ boyfriends.

Following this call, the complainant was requested to meet the accused individuals at St. Joseph Guest House in Bolgatanga to discuss the matter.

However, upon their meeting, one of the accused individuals deemed the location unsuitable for their discussion and proposed that they reconvene at the Mobile Astro Turf Park in Bolgatanga later that day at 4:30 pm.

Unbeknownst to the complainant, the caller had already rallied the other accused individuals, positioning them in readiness at the designated meeting spot.

When the complainant arrived at the Mobile Astro Turf Park, she was ambushed and subjected to a vicious assault, allegedly for her alleged involvement with one of their boyfriends.

The prosecutor disclosed that during the incident, the accused individuals recorded the assault and subsequently shared the footage on social media platforms.

Fortunately, members of the Dangwoe community intervened, rescuing the victim and promptly transporting her to the hospital for medical treatment.

The case is now before the Bolgatanga District Court, with the accused students remanded into police custody as legal proceedings unfold. The alleged assault and the subsequent sharing of the video on social media have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in the Bolgatanga area.

As the case progresses, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing conflicts through peaceful and lawful means, rather than resorting to violence.
