On Thursday, June 13, 2024, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) held the prestigious WAEC Distinction Awards in Accra to honor outstanding school candidates who sat for the 2023 West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Among the celebrated scholars, Master Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton from St. James Seminary Senior High School emerged as the undisputed star, clinching the top position in Ghana and across all five WAEC member countries.
Leonard’s exceptional performance distinguished him from a pool of 2,327,342 candidates, earning him the highest accolade in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates. This remarkable achievement not only highlights his academic brilliance but also brings immense pride to his school and country.
In addition to Leonard’s triumph, other talented students were also recognized for their excellence. Master Dzandu Selorm from Labone Senior High School was named the first runner-up, while Master Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, also from St. James Seminary, secured the second runner-up position.
The ceremony also spotlighted winners in specific academic programs. Laudina Adutwumwaa from St Monica’s Senior High School topped the General Arts category, Kwasi Asare Adjei-Fordjour from St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast excelled in Business, and Akosua Adjei Boateng from Juaso Senior High Technical School in Juaso-Ashanti led the Technical category.
The excitement surrounding these achievements was further amplified by the earlier recognition of Leonard, Selorm, and Daniel on an international stage. In March 2024, they were honored at the 72nd Annual WAEC Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where they received the top three prizes in the WAEC International Excellence Awards for 2023 school candidates. This distinguished them as the best among the 2,327,342 students from the five-member countries who sat for the WASSCE 2023.
