The long-awaited release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results has finally been given a confirmed timeline. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Education Minister, has officially announced that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will release the results by December 29, 2024. This development provides a much-needed sigh of relief to thousands of candidates who have expressed anxiety over the delay.

Dr. Adutwum’s statement comes amid widespread concern and frustration from candidates and stakeholders about the implications of the delay on tertiary admissions. The Minister assured the public during a press briefing on Tuesday, December 24, that significant progress has been made to resolve the challenges facing WAEC. “I came to apprise myself of developments in terms of the fact that they are working now through the holidays to get the results out on or before the 29th of this month. So I came and saw the workers working, and currently close to 50% of the objectives have been marked,” he stated.

The Delay and Its Challenges

The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has been attributed to financial challenges faced by WAEC. According to John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the council’s financial difficulties stem from the government’s inability to settle a debt of GH₵118 million. This debt has resulted in technicians withdrawing their services, leaving specialized equipment essential for grading examination papers in disrepair.

These financial challenges have significantly disrupted the grading process, particularly for objective questions, heightening anxiety among candidates. Many fear the delay could affect their chances of securing admission into tertiary institutions, as most universities and colleges are already deep into their admission processes.

Government’s Intervention

In response to the growing concerns, the Ministry of Education recently released an additional GH₵25 million to WAEC. This funding aims to address the council’s financial obligations, enabling it to expedite the grading and release process. Dr. Adutwum also emphasized that measures have been put in place to ensure the timely release of results while maintaining the integrity of the examination process.

The Minister noted that WAEC has already completed 50% of the objective marking and is working diligently through the holiday season to meet the December 29 deadline. “This decision aims to provide more time for the completion of the marking process while helping WAEC manage its financial resources effectively,” he explained.

Candidates’ Relief and Remaining Concerns

The announcement has eased some of the anxiety among candidates, who have been vocal about their frustrations on social media. Many students have expressed relief that a definitive timeline is now in place, allowing them to plan their next steps more effectively. However, concerns remain about whether all universities and colleges will accommodate late admissions for affected students.

For candidates, the timely release of results is critical. As one student lamented, “We’ve worked hard for years, and now we’re uncertain about our next steps because of this delay.” This sentiment is shared widely, underscoring the importance of WAEC meeting the new deadline without further setbacks.

The Bigger Picture

The delay also sheds light on broader systemic challenges within Ghana’s education sector. Stakeholders have called for more sustainable funding mechanisms to prevent such issues from recurring in the future. The situation highlights the need for proactive measures to ensure financial stability for institutions like WAEC, whose operations are critical to the academic and professional aspirations of young Ghanaians.

What’s Next?

With WAEC now committed to releasing the results on December 29, attention will turn to how quickly candidates can access their results and proceed with their tertiary admissions. The Minister’s assurances have provided a glimmer of hope, but the coming days will be crucial in determining whether WAEC can meet the expectations of students, parents, and educational institutions.

As the academic futures of thousands hang in the balance, all eyes remain on WAEC to deliver on its promise. For now, the confirmed release date offers a much-needed ray of hope for candidates eager to take the next step in their educational journey.
