In a major breakthrough for thousands of newly recruited teachers, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced that it has received financial clearance from the government to pay the salaries of the remaining 6,249 teachers who were recruited in 2024.
This development comes after months of frustration and protests by affected teachers, many of whom had worked for several months without pay. The announcement was made through an official press release signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, dated 16th October 2025.
Background: Months of Unpaid Salaries and Teacher Protests
Earlier in September 2025, newly posted teachers from the 2022 cohort of Colleges of Education and university graduates took to the streets of Accra to protest over delayed salaries. The peaceful demonstration began at Obra Spot near Kwame Nkrumah Circle and passed through key government offices — including the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance — before ending at the Jubilee House.
The teachers, who had served for up to 13 months without pay, decried what they described as neglect by the authorities. Their calls for government intervention eventually drew the attention of the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who labeled the situation as an “unacceptable labour practice.”
Speaking after receiving the petition, Minister Iddrisu assured the teachers that he had initiated discussions with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to address the issue. He further revealed that a joint cabinet memorandum was being prepared to expedite the release of funds for salary payments.
GES Confirms Financial Clearance
Following these interventions, the GES has now confirmed that financial clearance has been granted to facilitate the payment of salaries for all affected teachers.
According to the official statement, this approval empowers GES to complete all necessary processes to ensure teachers receive their salaries promptly. The clearance, which expires on 31st December 2025, is expected to cover November 2025 payments, allowing the staff to be placed on the mechanized payroll in time.
