In a recent announcement by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), a series of notable changes in the Teachers’ Mutual Fund loan requirements are set to take effect from February 2024. The modifications aim to streamline the loan application process, ensure financial stability, and maintain the integrity of the fund.

Minimum Contribution Period

One of the key adjustments involves the minimum contribution period. To be eligible for a loan, both existing and new contributors are now required to contribute to the fund for a minimum of six (6) months. However, members who are reinstated after exiting must observe a minimum of twelve (12) months of contributions to qualify for a loan.

Contribution to Loan Ratio

The contribution to loan ratio is also undergoing changes. New and existing members must have a total fund contribution equivalent to at least 15% of every loan request. Reinstated members, on the other hand, will be required to have 20% of the loan amount as their contribution.

Monthly Contribution

Loan beneficiaries are now obligated to maintain a monthly fund contribution equivalent to 1% of the loan request. There is a maximum ceiling of GHC200, GHC250, and GHC300 for Personal loans, Investment Capital loans, and Habitat loans, respectively. In cases where Investment Capital or Habitat loan requests fall within the Personal loan threshold, the respective Personal loan ceiling will apply.

Loan Frequency

Members seeking loans must observe a six (6) months interval between loan applications.

Witness and Guarantors

For loan requests up to GHC10,000, one witness is required. However, for loan amounts exceeding GH¢10,000, members must provide at least one guarantor. The conditions for a guarantor include being a registered and active member of the fund with a minimum contribution of six (6) months.

Additionally, a guarantor can only guarantee for a maximum of two qualified loan applicants at a time. To complete the process, a guarantor must submit a color copy of their Ghana Card (Front and Back) for authenticity verification, and their remaining active service period must not be shorter than the duration/tenor of the loan requested by the applicant.

These changes are poised to enhance the Teachers’ Mutual Fund’s effectiveness, ensuring that it continues to serve the needs of educators while maintaining the financial stability of the fund. GNAT encourages all members to familiarize themselves with these adjustments and plan their loan applications accordingly.
