On the coastal shores of Nsawam in the Eastern Region, a brilliant mind was born on April 1, 1972 – none other than Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto. Hailing from Adutor in the Volta Region, his journey in academia and environmental science has been nothing short of remarkable.
Prof. Aheto’s academic odyssey commenced at St. Martins’ Secondary School in Nsawam, where he completed his O’ Level in 1990. He continued his pursuit of knowledge at the Pope Johns’ Secondary School in Koforidua, achieving his A’ Level in 1992.
His academic prowess then led him to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where in 1998, he earned a Bsc. (Hons) Degree in Biological Sciences and a Diploma in Education.
This was only the beginning. Driven by a passion for the natural world, he worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Botany at UCC from 1998 to 1999, before joining the Ghana Education Service as a Biology Teacher at St. Augustine’s College in 1999.
Undeterred by geographical boundaries, Prof. Aheto expanded his horizons by completing his master’s degree in Rural Development Studies at the Swedish Agricultural University in Uppsala in 2002.
He continued his academic journey with an MSc. Degree in International Studies in Tropical Aquatic Ecology at the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology in 2004. The pinnacle of his academic achievements was marked by a PhD Degree in Environmental Science at the Center for Environment and Technology at the University of Bremen, Germany, in 2008.
In 2009, Prof. Aheto returned to UCC as a lecturer at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS). His dedication and leadership skills were quickly recognized, leading to his appointment as Casford Hall Tutor in 2010.
The academic ladder saw him climb to the position of Senior Lecturer in 2012, and in the same year, he was entrusted with the role of Head of DFAS.
During his tenure as the Head of DFAS, Prof. Aheto played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Centre for Coastal Management in 2013, where he was subsequently appointed as its first Director in 2016—a position he continues to hold with distinction.
His commitment to advancing knowledge is evident in the publication of over 50 peer-reviewed academic papers in reputable journals over a span of 14 years. His research prowess has garnered interest and support from renowned organizations, including the World Bank.
Beyond the academic realm, Prof. Aheto is a staunch Catholic. His interests extend to music, travelling, and cherishing family leisure time. In his personal life, he is happily married to Mrs. Cythia Aheto, and the couple is blessed with a son, Arnold Sefa Aheto.
Prof. Aheto’s professional journey reached new heights when he was promoted to the position of Associate Professor in 2017, followed by the pinnacle of academic success—being promoted to a full-fledged Professor in 2020.
A crowning moment in his illustrious career occurred on Thursday, 9 November, 2023, when Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto delivered his inaugural lecture on the topic: “Our Oceans: Securing Our Common Future Through Transformative Research.”
