Born on April 1, 1962, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh embarked on her education from the humble beginnings of Essikadu Methodist Nursery, Saltpond Methodist Primary B School, and Tema Padmore Street Primary School for her primary education. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Koforidua Methodist Girls School for middle school, and later to Asanteman Secondary School in Kumasi, and Oda Secondary School for her O’ Level Certificate.
Her passion for teaching manifested early, climaxing in the attainment of her Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’ from the Komenda Training College in 1986. Undeterred by challenges, she pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with an English major and a Diploma in Education at UCC in 1993. Her academic journey continued as she served as a Teaching Assistant and Senior Research Assistant at the Department of English, earning a Master of Philosophy degree in English Language in 1999.
The zenith of her academic pursuits came with the completion of her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture from the University of Iowa, USA, in 2006. Prof. Edu-Buandoh’s ascent within academia was marked by steady progression, from Assistant Lecturer in 2000 to Associate Professor in 2012, and finally to the pinnacle of her career, Professor of English in 2021.
Her contributions extend far beyond the confines of the classroom. Prof. Edu-Buandoh has held various leadership positions, including Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and the first female Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies at UCC. Notably, she chaired the Presidential Committee on Emoluments of Article 71 Office Holders in Ghana in 2016, highlighting her expertise and leadership acumen.
In addition to her academic and administrative roles, Prof. Edu-Buandoh is a beacon of philanthropy and advocacy. She established the Dora Edu-Buandoh Foundation on November 15, 2022, with a noble mission to support equitable access to higher education and advance the cause of young women in Ghana.
A woman of faith and family, Prof. Edu-Buandoh is a staunch member of the Evangelical Methodist Church of Christ, Ghana, and a proud mother to her son, Dr. Fiifi Edu-Afful.
Recently, on April 9, 2024, she delivered her inaugural lecture titled “Discourses of our Times: Power, Norms of Language Use, and Identity Formation,” evidence to her scholarly ability and intellectual depth.
