In the realm of academia and educational leadership, certain individuals stand out as shining examples of dedication, passion, and commitment. One such luminary is Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, a distinguished scholar and educator with a remarkable journey that has left an indelible mark on the field of history, education, and curriculum development.

Born in the year 1965, Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng’s educational journey began at the Gyetiase Local Authority Primary School and the Mim Methodist School, where he received his primary and middle education. His thirst for knowledge led him to the Ahafo Secondary Technical School, and later, to Sunyani Secondary School, where he pursued both his Ordinary and Advanced level education.

After completing his secondary education, Prof. Kwarteng embarked on a path that would shape his future. He gained admission to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Diploma in Education, majoring in History and Religious Studies. Following his own educational journey, he ventured into professional teaching, serving at Kumasi Senior High School from 1992 to 1999.

Prof. Kwarteng’s commitment to academia led him to further his studies at UCC, where he obtained his M.Phil degree. In 2001, he was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer at UCC, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in higher education.

However, his pursuit of knowledge did not stop there. He went on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham, UK, solidifying his position as a leading scholar in his field.

Beyond the classroom, Prof. Kwarteng has played crucial roles in educational institutions and organizations. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School at Saltpond from 2012 to 2017.

Currently, he holds the prestigious position of Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), where he plays a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of Ghana.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Prof. Kwarteng has made significant contributions to the field of history. He led two separate teams of academics to write the History of UCC in 2022, commemorating its 60th anniversary, and the History of Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust in 2023, celebrating the organization’s Silver Jubilee.

Prof. Kwarteng’s influence extends to the mentorship of budding scholars. He has supervised and trained two Ph.D. students and eight M.Phil students at the Department of History-UCC, nurturing the next generation of academics.

Prof. Kwarteng’s dedication and achievements have not gone unnoticed. He served as the President of the University Teachers Association-UCC until October 2017 and was a member of the UCC Governing Council.

In 2019, his outstanding contributions to academia were acknowledged when he was appointed as a Full Professor. More recently, in 2022, he assumed the role of Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies at UCC.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Prof. Kwarteng finds balance in his personal life. He is happily married to Mrs. Comfort Osei Kwarteng and is blessed with three children: two daughters and a son. He is a staunch Christian and a devoted member of the Harvest Chapel International Church.

Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng delivered an Inaugural Lecture titled “The Ideological Square: A Historian’s Framework for Environmental Conservation.”
