In Ghana, the education system is structured to ensure that teachers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for their respective teaching levels. The qualifications required for teaching at different educational levels vary, ensuring a high standard of education across all tiers.

Here is a comprehensive guide on the teaching qualifications required at various educational levels in Ghana:

Basic Level (Primary & Junior High School)

At the basic level, which includes primary and Junior High Schools, the minimum qualification required is a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in primary education or a specific subject area for junior high school (JHS). This standard ensures that teachers possess a thorough understanding of the curriculum and the pedagogical skills necessary for effective teaching.

Previously, a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) was an accepted qualification for teaching at this level. However, this has recently become obsolete, and the emphasis is now on obtaining a B.Ed to ensure a more robust educational foundation for teachers.

Senior High School (SHS)/Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

For teaching at the Senior High School level, as well as in technical and vocational education and training institutions, a higher level of specialization is required. Teachers must possess a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a specialization in the specific subject area they intend to teach.

This requirement ensures that teachers have an in-depth understanding of the subjects they are teaching, which is crucial for the advanced level of education provided at SHS and TVET institutions.

Colleges of Education

Teaching at colleges of education requires even higher qualifications. The minimum qualification for teaching at this level is a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a subject area related to the teacher’s first degree.

For example, an individual with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in Information Technology would need to obtain an MPhil or PhD in Information Technology or ICT to qualify for teaching at a college of education. This advanced level of education ensures that teachers are well-prepared to train future educators.

Universities/Technical Universities

At the university and technical university levels, the minimum qualification required for teaching is an MPhil or PhD in a specific subject area. While the advanced degree does not necessarily need to be in the same subject as the first degree, it must be in the same subject area.

For instance, a person with a B.Ed or BSc in Accounting can pursue an MPhil or PhD in Finance, Management, Marketing, Human Resource, or Procurement and Supply Chain.

In addition, if an applicant does not have a background in education, they must obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). This ensures that even those transitioning from other fields into academia are equipped with the necessary pedagogical skills.

Key Points

  • Progression: Each educational level requires progressively higher qualifications, ensuring that teachers are increasingly specialized and knowledgeable as they advance.
  • Specialization: At higher levels, teachers can shift their specialization to related fields, providing flexibility and allowing for a broad range of expertise.
  • Flexibility: Universities and technical universities offer more flexibility in subject area transitions between degrees, accommodating various academic and professional backgrounds.
  • Education Background: For university-level teaching, a PGDE is mandatory for those without a prior education-focused degree, ensuring comprehensive teaching skills.

This structure ensures that teachers in Ghana are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for their respective teaching levels, promoting a high standard of education across all tiers.
