The University of Ghana School of Nursing is renowned as one of Ghana’s esteemed institutions for nursing education. It operates as an integral part of the University of Ghana and provides comprehensive training for aspiring nurses across various fields of study.

History About University of Ghana School of Nursing

Originally established in 1963, the University of Ghana School of Nursing began as a Post Basic Nursing Institution. Its primary mission was to prepare Diploma-awarded Nurse Tutors for basic nursing training institutions.

Over time, it expanded its offerings to include certificate courses in Nursing Management and diploma courses in Nursing Service Administration. In 1980, it evolved into the Department of Nursing, falling under the Faculties of Science and Social Studies.

Eventually, it attained the status of a School and became an integral part of the College of Health Sciences.

Structure of the School

The School of Nursing is currently organized into five distinct departments, each of which offers both undergraduate and graduate programs:

  • Department of Mental Health Nursing
  • Department of Community Health Nursing
  • Department of Maternal and Child Health Nursing
  • Department of Adult Health Nursing
  • Department of Research, Education, and Administration

Graduate Programs

The School of Nursing provides graduate programs for those seeking to advance their nursing education. These include:

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
  • Master of Science (MSc)

Undergraduate Programs

The School of Nursing offers a comprehensive 4-year undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Nursing degree. Within this program, students can specialize in the following fields:

  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Paediatric Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • General Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing

This undergraduate program encompasses both theoretical and practical aspects of nursing. It spans eight semesters, with two semesters in each academic year. In every semester, students engage in 16 weeks of nursing training, with a mandatory 3-week clinical practice during each semester and a 6-week clinical component at the conclusion of every academic year.

The clinical training component is designed to familiarize students with the practical dimensions of their chosen field.

Graduate Programs at the University of Ghana School of Nursing

The University of Ghana School of Nursing offers a range of graduate degree programs, allowing students to further their education and deepen their expertise in their respective fields of study. These programs include:

Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) / Master of Science (MSc) in Nursing

The Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) in Nursing programs are designed with different durations. The MSc program typically spans 12 months, while the M. Phil program extends over 24 months.

Paediatric Nursing Program – MPhil

The Paediatric Nursing program is a 12-month certificate program that provides a comprehensive blend of theory and practical training. It includes didactic teaching-learning sessions, skill development in paediatric nursing, interactive workshops featuring case-based training, extensive clinical placement opportunities across diverse practice settings, and simulation exercises.

This program is conducted in collaboration with the following institutions:

  • The School of Nursing
  • College of Health Sciences
  • University of Ghana
  • Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital
  • The Ministry of Health
  • The Ghana Health Service
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana
  • SickKids International of Canada

Notably, the Paediatric Nursing program receives sponsorship from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and support from the SickKids Foundation of Canada.

University of Ghana School of Nursing Requirements

Undergraduate Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the undergraduate programs at the University of Ghana School of Nursing must fulfill the following requirements:

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders should have passes in the three core subjects, which include English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Science. Alternatively, they must have passes in three elective subjects chosen from the following categories:

  • Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Elective Mathematics
  • Physics, General Agriculture, and Chemistry
  • Three General Arts Electives
  • Two General Arts Elective subjects along with Food & Nutrition
  • Any three of the following Electives: Chemistry, Management in Living, Economics, Food & Nutrition, General Knowledge in Art, and French.

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders will be admitted at Level 100.

Diploma Holders

For diploma holders, the requirements differ as follows:

  • Applicants must hold a Diploma in Nursing Education / Administration from a reputable university and maintain a minimum of a B+ average or second class upper.
  • Applicants must be diploma holders in Nursing from a reputable nursing institution with a minimum CGPA of 3.25.

Diploma Holders will be admitted at Level 200.

Foreign Applicants

International students are subject to results verification by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and the University of Ghana to confirm their eligibility before they are considered for admission.

Graduate Requirements

For those applying for the Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Nursing programs, the following requirements must be met:

  • All applicants must hold a BA/BSc in Nursing with at least a second class lower division.
  • All applicants must be registered nurses with a minimum of 2 years of nursing practice.
  • All applicants must successfully pass a selection interview as part of the admission process.

How to Apply for the University of Ghana School of Nursing

For Ghanaian Applicants

Ghanaian students must follow these steps to apply for the University of Ghana School of Nursing:

  1. Purchase an e-voucher for GHc200.00, which is required for registration. E-vouchers can be obtained from any of the following banks:
  • Ecobank
  • Republic Bank
  • Agricultural Development Bank
  • Ghana Commercial Bank
  • Zenith Bank
  • Universal Merchant Bank
  • Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG)
  • Prudential Bank
  • Fidelity Bank

2. Diploma/HND degree applicants should scan and attach their Diploma/HND transcripts and certified copies of “O” and “A” Level certificates/result slips. Ensure that these scanned documents are compiled into a single PDF or WORD document and attach them to the application form.

For International Students and Ghanaians Applying from Abroad

International students and Ghanaians applying from abroad have a different application process. They do not need to purchase an e-voucher. Instead, they should complete their application forms online.
