Ahead of the highly anticipated 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed a detailed set of pre-examination procedures. These procedures, aim to inform and enlighten members of the public, especially candidates gearing up for these significant international and national assessments.

2024 BECE & WASSCE Pre-examination Procedures

Procedure 1

The initial steps encompass the meticulous development of teaching syllabi by the Ghana Education Service and examination syllabi by WAEC. Following this, there’s a crucial phase involving the training of item writers, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. Subsequently, a team of knowledgeable individuals and subject matter experts is commissioned to set questions, thus ensuring the quality and relevance of the examination content.

Procedure 2

This phase involves rigorous testing and moderation of items to guarantee their accuracy and appropriateness. Experts moderate the items, which are then compiled by subject officers. The process further includes typesetting, proofreading, and editing to ensure flawless question papers. Finally, the papers are printed, marking a significant milestone in the preparation process.

Procedure 3

The subsequent procedures involve logistical arrangements and candidate registration. Registration of candidates, which is primarily conducted online, sees BECE school candidates registered by District Directors of Education and WASSCE school candidates registered by Heads of School. Additionally, arrangements for examination centers are meticulously made to ensure smooth conduct of the examinations. For schools conducting continuous assessment, the submission of scores is also a vital part of this phase.

Procedure 4

As the examination dates draw nearer, there is a series of preparatory activities aimed at ensuring all stakeholders are adequately briefed and sensitized. Briefing courses are organized for heads of schools and examination officials to familiarize them with the examination protocols and procedures. Furthermore, sensitization programs are conducted for schools and candidates, emphasizing the importance of adherence to examination rules and regulations. Finally, confidential materials are securely packed in preparation for distribution to examination centers.
