Ghana has once again demonstrated its academic mastery on the international stage as three exceptional young minds clinched the top three spots at the International Excellence Awards for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2023. Out of a staggering pool of 2,327,342 candidates from five member countries of the Council, these remarkable students from Ghana emerged as the epitome of excellence.
Master Leonard Kofi M. Amo-Kodieh, a distinguished alumni of St. James Seminary Senior High School, claimed the prestigious title of 1st Overall Best Candidate. Following closely behind him, Master Selorm Dzandu of Labone Senior High School secured the 2nd Overall Best Candidate position, while Master Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, also from St. James Seminary Senior High School, proudly took the 3rd Overall Best Candidate accolade.
Their outstanding achievements were celebrated during the Opening Ceremony of the 72nd Annual Council Meeting held in Freetown, Sierra Leone. These prodigious individuals were honored for their exceptional academic performance, bringing immense pride to their nation.
Master Leonard Kofi M. Amo-Kodieh and Master Selorm Dzandu have embarked on their journey in the field of Medicine at the esteemed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Meanwhile, Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi has chosen to pursue his passion in Computer Engineering at Ashesi University, highlighting not only their academic brilliance but also their diverse interests and aspirations.
During his valedictory speech, Master Leonard Kofi M. Amo-Kodieh urged students across West Africa to prioritize their education, emphasizing its transformative power in shaping the future.
The distinguished guests present at the ceremony included the Head of National Office, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, Chief Government Nominee to Council, Dr. Eric Nkansah, Council Members from Ghana, and the Headmaster of St. James Seminary SHS, Father Owusu Sekyere.
Established in 1985, the International Excellence Awards aim to honor candidates who exhibit outstanding performance in the Council’s Senior High School Certificate examinations. Originally based on the results of the SC/GCE ‘O’ Level (International) examination, these awards transitioned to recognize excellence in the WASSCE since its inception in 1998.
