In a bold move to demand justice and adherence to the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has decided to take action.
After numerous attempts to persuade their employer to comply with the orders issued on May 2, 2023, the CETAG’s National Delegates Conference met on July 30 and 31, 2023, and unanimously resolved to withdraw all teaching and related services from the 46 public colleges of education across Ghana, effective from August 1, 2023.
The primary demands of CETAG are centered around addressing the long-standing issue of unpaid allowances and overdue compensation. The association insists on the full payment of seven months’ arrears of allowances, as per the approved conditions of service, as directed by the NLC.
Furthermore, CETAG demands the payment of one-month salary to each member as compensation for the additional duties performed in the year 2022, as ordered by the NLC.
In addition to financial concerns, CETAG has raised issues regarding the lack of transparency and fairness in the system. The association calls for the publication of the Staff Audit report and the subsequent extension of public universities’ rates of allowances to deserving CETAG members, as per the NLC’s Arbitral Award Order.
One of the pressing issues affecting the quality of education and the welfare of tutors is the delay in granting them their entitled leave. CETAG demands the immediate release of leave rosters by each college of education, allowing each tutor to take fifteen working days leave for the year 2022, in line with the NLC’s order.
Another significant demand is the unconditional cancellation of the “killer” all-year-round academic calendar, which has been in effect since the 2023/2024 academic year. This academic calendar has placed an undue burden on tutors and students, negatively impacting the quality of education.
It is important to note that this decision was not taken lightly, as CETAG acknowledges the potential impact on students and the larger community. However, the association firmly believes that this action is necessary to gain the attention of relevant authorities and ensure the fulfillment of their legitimate demands.
As this nationwide withdrawal of services takes effect, it is expected that the various Branch Associations of CETAG will act promptly and adhere to the resolution. The success of this endeavor lies in the unity and determination of the tutors and their commitment to seeking a just and equitable resolution.
