In anticipation of the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a temporary recess for students in Senior High Schools (SHS). This one-week break aims to facilitate the smooth conduct of the BECE.
Senior High Schools will commence the temporary recess on Friday, 5th July 2024, and resume on Friday, 12th July 2024. This directive applies to Form One and Form Two students, who are required to go home during this period. However, any Form One or Form Two student who wishes to stay on campus is permitted to do so.
Form Three students are generally exempted from this recess, as their classes will continue uninterrupted from Monday, 8th July 2024. Nonetheless, any Form Three student who wishes to go home during this period must seek permission from the Senior Housemaster or Senior Housemistress before departing.
The BECE is scheduled to take place from Monday, 8th July 2024, through to Friday, 12th July 2024. In line with this, Heads of Departments and Form Masters are tasked with ensuring full compliance with this directive to support the effective administration of the examination.
This announcement is intended to inform all staff and students of the temporary changes and to ensure a smooth transition during the examination period.
Statistics for 2024 BECE
The 2024 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates is set to commence on Monday, July 8, 2024, and conclude on Monday, July 15, 2024. This year’s examination will see a significant number of students participating, with a total of 569,095 candidates from both private and public Junior High Schools (JHSs) across the country.
Breaking down the numbers, the candidates consist of 282,648 males and 286,447 females, all hailing from 19,506 JHSs. These school candidates will be assessed based on the newly introduced Common Core Curriculum, marking a significant change in the examination process.
In addition to the school candidates, the BECE for Private Candidates will also take place. According to a statement by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), 1,366 private candidates are expected to sit for the examination. This group comprises 735 males and 631 females. Unlike the school candidates, private candidates will be examined based on the old syllabus.
The examination for school candidates will be conducted in 2,123 centres nationwide. To ensure the smooth administration of the exams, WAEC has engaged a substantial number of personnel, including 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors, and 19,973 invigilators.
For the private candidates, the examination will be held in fifteen centres, primarily located in regional capitals. This arrangement aims to facilitate the participation of candidates from various parts of the country.
