In what is being described as a major boost for the education sector, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is set to recruit 50,000 graduate teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in the 2025 calendar year. This was officially disclosed by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The announcement comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to address staffing shortages in schools across the country, improve educational infrastructure, and ultimately enhance teaching and learning outcomes at all levels. The large-scale recruitment exercise is seen as a significant intervention to support Ghana’s vision of providing quality education for all.

According to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the government has made adequate budgetary provisions in the 2025 national budget to ensure that the recruitment process is successfully carried out without financial obstacles. This recruitment will not only cater to the pressing need for more teachers in public schools but also ensure that non-teaching staff are available to provide essential administrative and support services within the education system.

Education analysts and stakeholders have long advocated for increased investment in the recruitment of qualified personnel to strengthen the education workforce. Over the years, many schools, especially in rural and deprived areas, have suffered from a lack of adequate teaching staff, placing immense pressure on existing teachers and affecting learning outcomes.

The recruitment of 50,000 graduate teachers is expected to significantly alleviate this challenge by filling vacancies in basic and secondary schools nationwide. These new recruits will play a crucial role in delivering quality education, promoting student engagement, and reducing teacher-to-student ratios, which have been a longstanding concern in the sector.

In addition to teaching staff, the planned recruitment of 10,000 non-teaching personnel will ensure that schools are well-equipped with administrative, technical, and support staff. These include clerks, cleaners, security personnel, accountants, and other essential roles that contribute to the smooth running of schools and the creation of a conducive learning environment.

This bold initiative by the government is being welcomed by education sector stakeholders, including teacher unions, graduate teacher associations, and recent graduates who have been awaiting job opportunities. It is expected to reduce unemployment among trained teachers and improve operational efficiency within the GES.

While details regarding the specific recruitment process, eligibility criteria, and timelines are yet to be officially announced, prospective applicants are being advised to stay updated through the official websites and communication channels of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

Many believe that this large-scale recruitment reflects the government’s recognition of education as a cornerstone for national development. By strengthening the human resource base of schools, the initiative is expected to not only create employment opportunities but also significantly contribute to Ghana’s educational goals and the broader national development agenda.

Prospective applicants and stakeholders are encouraged to remain patient and alert for official announcements concerning application procedures. The coming months will be crucial as the GES and Ministry of Education roll out the processes to bring thousands of new professionals into Ghana’s classrooms and educational institutions.

This initiative stands as a significant opportunity for qualified graduates looking to contribute to nation-building while securing stable employment in the education sector.
