In a major development aimed at strengthening Ghana’s educational workforce, the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is set to recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in the 2025 calendar year. This announcement was made during his address to Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

According to the Minister, the recruitment drive forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve the quality of education and enhance learning outcomes across the country. The Education Minister confidently stated that adequate financial provisions have already been made in the 2025 national budget to support the large-scale recruitment process.

This development comes at a time when there has been increased public concern over teacher shortages in several schools, as well as delays and frustrations associated with postings for newly trained teachers. Hon. Haruna Iddrisu used the parliamentary platform to directly address these concerns, providing clarity on steps being taken to resolve the challenges facing teacher recruitment and deployment.

In response to concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, regarding the alleged manhandling of teachers who recently picketed at the premises of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Minister categorically dismissed those claims. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to treating teachers with the utmost respect while ensuring that recruitment processes are fair, transparent, and efficient.

The Minister also shed light on the ongoing dialogue between his office and key stakeholders within the education sector. He revealed that he recently met with Bafour Eric, a prominent figure involved in teacher recruitment discussions. The meeting, according to the Minister, focused on issues surrounding clearance for teacher postings.

“I met with Bafour Eric this morning, and I will soon share the details with the public. During our discussion, he indicated to me that clearance for recruitment was received as far back as May. These recruits were expected to start work in August but unfortunately began in September,” Hon. Iddrisu explained.

He further clarified that the clearance issued by the Ministry of Finance had a validity period that expired on December 31, 2024. As a result, the recruitment process could only proceed upon the renewal of this clearance, which the Ministry of Education is currently awaiting. The Minister urged aspiring recruits and the general public to remain patient and assured them that the necessary processes are being fast-tracked.

“Let them be assured. As I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” he reiterated.

The recruitment of 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff marks one of the largest single-year education sector employment initiatives in recent years. Analysts believe that this move will significantly help address teacher deficits in basic and secondary schools, while also providing critical support staff to ensure the smooth running of schools nationwide.

Stakeholders within the education sector, including teacher unions and education advocacy groups, have welcomed the announcement but are calling for transparency and efficiency in the recruitment process. Many are hopeful that the initiative will not only create job opportunities for thousands of trained graduates but also lead to a measurable improvement in the quality of teaching and learning, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

The Ministry of Education has yet to release the full details regarding application procedures, timelines, and specific requirements for interested applicants. However, prospective candidates are advised to stay alert for official updates from the Ministry or the Ghana Education Service in the coming weeks.

This recruitment drive highlights the government’s recognition of education as a critical pillar for national development. As the country looks to build a resilient and skilled workforce, the addition of thousands of qualified educators and support staff is seen as a vital investment in Ghana’s future.

For now, all eyes remain on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service as the nation eagerly awaits the rollout of the much-anticipated recruitment process.
