In a bold and transformative move aimed at addressing the critical staffing shortages in the country’s education sector, the Ministry of Education in Ghana, led by Minister Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed plans to recruit 93,000 teachers across various educational institutions nationwide. This massive teacher recruitment initiative is currently pending financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, signaling one of the largest employment efforts in Ghana’s education sector in recent years.

Government’s Teacher Recruitment 2025: Financial Clearance in Progress

Speaking at the 22nd Biennial Congress of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) held in Aburi, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that the Ministry is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Finance to secure financial clearance for teacher recruitment. The 93,000 job placements will cover:

  • Public universities and colleges
  • The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)
  • Ghana Education Service (GES)
  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service

“In our space alone, we require 93,000 recruitments to fill vacancies both for institutions of higher learning, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the Ghana Education Service, and the TVET Service,” Minister Iddrisu stated.

This announcement has generated significant attention from job seekers, particularly graduates from colleges of education and university-trained teachers eager for teaching opportunities in Ghana.

GH¢610 Million Released for Book and Research Allowances

In a parallel financial commitment, the Minister also disclosed that the Government of Ghana is allocating GH¢610 million to settle outstanding book and research allowances for university lecturers. This payment, a key component of academic staff conditions of service, is expected to hit the accounts of university lecturers across Ghana soon.

“We are honouring a legitimate condition of service of university teachers, which is the payment of book and research allowance. The money will hit your account shortly,” Mr. Iddrisu assured members of UTAG.

This move aims to restore trust and confidence in the government’s commitment to improving higher education funding in Ghana.

Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Call for Ethical Oversight

Beyond recruitment and funding, Minister Iddrisu also addressed the rising influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education, emphasizing the need for digital literacy, AI-driven pedagogy, and ethical frameworks to guide its adoption.

“AI will change the way we learn, the way we teach, and the way we practise. Mainstreaming it as part of your pedagogical changes is significant,” he noted.

While acknowledging the benefits of AI in improving teaching and learning, he warned of potential misuse, including academic dishonesty and over-reliance on automation, calling for strong ethical policies to ensure responsible integration of technology in education.
