As Ghana’s educational system continues to evolve, the role of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in shaping the future of the nation becomes increasingly vital.
In an effort to bolster the quality of education in the country, the Executive Director of the NSS, Osei Assibey Antwi, recently announced an exciting new initiative. Starting from the 2023/2024 academic year, all national service personnel who will be posted to educational institutions will undergo a one-month training program after completing their service.
This specialized training will empower them with teaching skills, transforming them into certified teachers and enriching the educational experience for students across the nation.
One of the primary objectives of the NSS is to equip tertiary graduates with essential skills and experiences that contribute to their personal and professional growth. In line with this mission, the NSS, in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC) and other relevant educational stakeholders, has devised a plan to provide specialized training for national service personnel deployed to schools.
This training will be particularly beneficial for graduates who are not from public teacher training institutions but find themselves posted to teach in schools.
By participating in the one-month training, these graduates will gain valuable teaching skills and methodologies that align with modern educational practices. The program aims to enhance their ability to effectively impart knowledge and foster a conducive learning environment for students.
Upon successful completion of the training, participants will be awarded certificates, recognizing their dedication to enhancing the educational landscape of Ghana.
As part of its strategic expansion, the NSS is targeting to post over sixty to seventy per cent of the 2023/2024 batch of national service personnel to the private sector. Over the years, the private sector has expressed a need for personnel who have received education in Science and technology-related courses at the university level.
In response to this demand, the NSS has decided to deploy more service personnel to the private sector, aiming to bridge the gap between skilled graduates and the evolving needs of private educational institutions.
In the years to come, the transformation of national service personnel into certified teachers and the strategic deployment to the private sector will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping a more prosperous and knowledgeable Ghana. As the program takes off in the upcoming academic year, the nation looks forward to reaping the benefits of a more skilled and empowered generation of educators.
