Takoradi Technical University (TTU) celebrated a momentous occasion at its 23rd Congregation as a total of 6,166 students successfully graduated during the 2022/2023 Academic Year. This marked a significant 30% increase from the previous year, an evidence to the university’s commitment to academic growth and the introduction of new programs.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the graduates. He revealed that the increase in numbers was largely due to the graduation of the first batch of four (4) years Bachelor of Technology degree programs.
The breakdown of the degrees awarded includes 11 Master degrees, 2,342 Bachelor of Technology degrees, 3,169 Higher National Diplomas, 236 Diplomas of Technology, and 388 Competency-Based Training certificates. Additionally, 20 students received certificates in short courses.
A noteworthy highlight of the ceremony was the inclusion of 24 disabled persons among the graduates, comprising 20 hearing-impaired students and 4 others with physical disabilities. This brings the total number of deaf students produced by the University to an impressive 164 since the establishment of the Disability Support and Services Unit in 2017.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized the university’s commitment to inclusive education and acknowledged the challenges faced by hearing-impaired students in mainstream classrooms.
Rev. Prof. Eshun appealed for increased funding support to sustain the Disability Support Unit, enabling more disabled individuals to access Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the highest level.
He expressed the university’s intention to leverage assistive technology, including hearing aids and special laptops, to facilitate the learning experience of these exceptional students.
In a bid to expand program options, the Vice Chancellor announced that TTU has received accreditation for six new Master of Technology programs. These programs, including Innovation and Enterprise Development, Mechanical Engineering, Power Production Systems and Integration, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Mathematics and Statistics, and Construction Engineering Management, will provide students with diverse academic avenues.
Furthermore, TTU is collaborating with the Maritime Institute of Palermo-Italy through the European Union-funded Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project. This collaboration aims to establish a Maritime Training Centre, offering professional maritime skills training and certification aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s standards.
Addressing the graduates, Prof. John Frank Eshun congratulated them on their successful completion and urged them to be ambassadors of TTU. He expressed gratitude to TTU alumni, institutions, and partners for their significant contributions to the university’s progress.
Dr. Samuel Amo Tobin, the Chairman of the TTU Governing Council, echoed the need for government support in infrastructure development, emphasizing the critical role of Technical University education in the nation’s development.
In a statement on behalf of the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, the government reaffirmed its commitment to increasing Ghana’s Gross Tertiary Education Ratio from 20 percent to 40 percent by 2030.
The ceremony recognized the outstanding academic achievements of the graduates, with 322 Bachelor of Technology graduates receiving First Class honors and 1,596 obtaining Second Class Upper. For Higher National Diplomas, 194 achieved First Class, while 1,776 secured Second Class Upper—a testament to the caliber of education provided by Takoradi Technical University.
