At just 13 years old, Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise has made history as one of the youngest undergraduates at the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). With a stellar academic performance, including A1 grades in five subjects such as Physics and Mathematics in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Melchizedek’s journey to studying Physics at KNUST is nothing short of remarkable.
Melchizedek’s love for Physics was the driving force behind his decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the subject. Among the various topics in Physics, Mechanics captivates him the most, as he enjoys the tangible and practical aspects of the field. In contrast, he finds Electricity and Magnetism a bit too abstract for his taste.
“I love the calculations and the mechanics. When you perform experiments, you get to feel them. Even though with electricity, you perform experiments, you don’t see the electrons moving,” he explained.
Growing up in a family of four, Melchizedek was inspired by his parents, both educators—his father is an Economics teacher, and his mother is a primary school teacher. Initially, Melchizedek aspired to become a pilot but eventually became aware of the limitations within that career path. His passion for discovery and curiosity led him to Physics, where he hopes to uncover his true interests.
“If I study Physics, I’ll get to discover my true interest. By my third or fourth year, I’ll decide whether to specialise in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering,” he shared.
A former student of St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary Senior High School in Sawla, Ghana, Melchizedek’s academic journey has been unconventional. He skipped Forms 2 and 3 to fast-track his education. While initially intimidated by the significant leap, he quickly adapted and now feels at ease among his older peers at the university.
“It doesn’t seem like much of a difference. It’s just normal,” he remarked confidently.
Melchizedek’s story is a proof to his determination, intellect, and ambition. Whether his future lies in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another discipline within Physics, one thing is certain—this young prodigy is on a path to greatness.
