In a groundbreaking move aimed at fostering holistic education and equipping students with essential critical thinking skills, Ghana’s educational system is undergoing significant reforms. Spearheaded by the Director-General of the National Council and Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Professor Edward Appiah, the latest directive signifies a departure from traditional rote learning towards a more comprehensive learning approach.

Effective from the 2024/2025 academic year, senior high school (SHS) Science students will witness a crucial change in their curriculum. Core and Elective Mathematics, as separate examinable subjects, will no longer be mandatory. Instead, students will delve into Additional Mathematics, marking a shift towards a more integrated approach to mathematical concepts.

Furthermore, the landscape of science education will undergo transformation, with SHS Science students bidding farewell to Integrated Science. Professor Appiah clarified that since these students are already immersed in Pure Science studies, Integrated Science will be replaced with General Science.

The educational reforms align with the nation’s adoption of standard-based and common core curricula for basic and junior high schools. These curricular frameworks are designed to nurture critical learning skills, steering students away from rote memorization towards a deeper understanding of subject matter.

The Ministry of Education’s revision of pre-tertiary school curricula emphasizes a commitment to progressive educational practices. The introduction of the common core Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) offers students a platform to demonstrate their comprehensive learning outcomes.

For senior high school students, a trial test of the common core curriculum has been completed, paving the way for its implementation in the upcoming academic year. NaCCA’s meticulous approach, categorizing schools into different zones for trial testing, ensures thorough evaluation and refinement of the curriculum.

With the finalization of the common core curriculum, 31 schools across the country are ready to participate in the conclusive trial test. This trial phase aims to validate the effectiveness of the curriculum, ensuring seamless integration into the educational landscape.

Professor Appiah emphasizes the paradigm shift in assessment methodologies, highlighting a move towards continuous assessment. The revised assessment approach encompasses classroom exercises and project work, providing a comprehensive evaluation of students’ progress. This dynamic assessment model fosters a conducive learning environment, empowering teachers to tailor their instructional methods to meet students’ needs effectively.
