The National Teaching Council (NTC) of Ghana has announced an important opportunity for diploma holders who have referrals in the traditional Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE). The ongoing registration for the 2023 GTLE II is exclusively for fresh candidates.
However, recognizing the need to provide one final chance to re-sit candidates, the NTC has set November 2023 as the last opportunity for diploma holders with referrals to redeem themselves before the introduction of the Subject-Based Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (SBGTLE) in 2024.
Under the GTLE reforms, candidates who have received referrals in the traditional GTLE’s Essential Professional Skills, Literacy, and Numeracy papers have been given three chances to pass the examination.
The first two opportunities have already been utilized, and the last chance for re-sit candidates to write the traditional GTLE will be in November 2023.
Starting from 2024, there will be no further examination for the traditional GTLE subjects. Any diploma holder with a referral in the traditional GTLE who wishes to retake the examination must adapt to the changes brought by the SBGTLE.
They will need to obtain a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education to be eligible for the SBGTLE.
The NTC’s decision to introduce the SBGTLE in 2024 reflects the council’s commitment to assessing both the contest and professional knowledge of prospective teachers. This reform aims to raise the standards of teacher licensure by testing candidates’ subject-specific content knowledge and pedagogical skills.
Diploma holders with referrals should take advantage of this last chance to register for the traditional GTLE and strive to pass the examination. For those unable to do so, obtaining a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education will be necessary to participate in the SBGTLE from 2024 onward.
